The A-1 Science of Diving Program

Why take this course?

This program provides an in-depth and detailed study of physics, physiology, decompression theory, the aquatic environment and diving equipment. It is required training for most SSI Dive Professional programs, as well as some Extended Range programs.

What will I do?

Your Science of Diving adventure starts by completing the 5 sessions in your online learning. Next, there will be a classroom session to answer any questions you may have about the material, clarify important points, and take your final exam. This course is designed to accompany the Science of Diving part of the Divemaster program, or can be taken as a standalone course for those who really want to get into the scientific details of diving.

  • SSI Science of Diving online manual (included in course fee)
  • Note taking supplies for classroom session

Prerequisites and Forms

  • Show proof of being an SSI Referral diver, Open Water diver or hold an equivalent certification from another recognized training agency.
    • Unfortunately you will not be able to participate in the program without showing the A-1 professional proof of certification.
    • While you may register for the specialty course as a Referral Diver, you must complete your open water certification dives before you can complete any specialty course dives.
  • Be at least 10 years old
  • Have a MySSI account.  Be sure to upload a digital photo to your account and enter a complete address. (You’ll need this in order to access your online learning material.)

The A-1 instructor will collect the following (completed) documents at the beginning of the first session.  Unfortunately, participants will not be able to continue until the instructor has reviewed them for accuracy.

(Note: The Physician’s Approval To Dive ONLY needs to be signed by a physician if you answer any medical questionnaire question with a ‘YES’)

Where can I go from here?

Once you complete four SSI specialties and digitally log 24 dives you will automatically be sent your digital Level 3/Advanced Diver Recognition card.  There is no charge for this certification recognition.
