Come join Scuba Diver Australasia Field Editor and professional photographer Doug Sloss for a full day workshop designed to help underwater shooters learn the essential Photoshop techniques necessary to improve the quality of their underwater images.

Beginning to Intermediate, with some advanced techniques

Course Requirements

Students should have a basic working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and digital photography and bring their laptops with a full version of Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3 installed. Photoshop CS3 is recommended.

While you can attend the seminar without your laptop, there will be workshop exercises available and supervised instruction to give all participants some hands-on experience of various topics for maximum benefit and understanding. Trial downloads of Adobe Photoshop CS3 are available at www.adobe.com if needed.

The workshop covers all sorts of essential Photoshop topics necessary to enhance the quality of your underwater images as well as some intermediate to advanced techniques taught in a learn-as-you-go manner. This visual and hands on approach helps students get a firm grasp on the topics at hand. The course is designed to get you up and running with Photoshop!

  • Understanding the RAW, JPEG and TIFF file types
  • The Adobe Camera Raw Interface and how to use it
  • Understanding and interpreting histograms
  • Basic Bridge mechanics –Organizing, renaming, and storing your images
  • Understanding Curves and Levels
  • The importance of Adjustment layers and layer masks and how to effectively use them
  • Dodging and burning with adjustment layers
  • Repairing blown-out highlights
  • Doing Cleanup in Photoshop - Getting rid of dust, backscatter and unwanted objects.
  • How to make water realistically blue
  • Correcting and enhancing image color for maximum impact
  • Creating black and white images
  • Recommended Workflow for an image
  • How to sharpen images for screen and print and selective areas in a photo
  • Output Consideration – Saving and organizing master files
  • Resizing images for print and the web
  • Automating workflow – Actions and Batch Processing and the Image Processor
